“Sergio Leone – The Italian who Invented America”, written and directed by Francesco Zippel and presented
presented in competition in the Venice Classics section of the 79th Venice International Film Festival,
won the Nastro d’Argento as Documentary of the Year 2023.
The Nastro D’Argento was awarded by the National Union of Film Industry Journalists with the
following motivation:
“the originality and emotions, present from the very first frame of this film,
affectionately and meticulously pay an original tribute to a great master who can never be celebrated enough, adopting an innovative approach
and comprising a wealth of highly prestigious international testimonies. A story that highlights the value
of Sergio Leone’s innovative and creative vision, a man born into the cinema whose
films have made film sequences, actors, music and images immortal”.
In this documentary Sergio Leone and his filmmaking are narrated through
new testimonies from those who knew him and from those who have been inspired by him, Amongst those who
took part are Jennifer Connelly, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Ennio Morricone, Martin
Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Dario Argento, Giuseppe Tornatore and Carlo
Verdone.
